Example 2

Q: Solve the equation:

Solution:
First rewrite the equation in the form

Run QUAD.  How?

Enter the coefficients
for A, B, and C:

The program reports:

Interpretation:
x = -1 + 1.73i   or
x = -1 - 1.73i

The third number listed is NOT a solution.  It is the discriminant.  Notice it says 'D=' for this number, not 'X='.  You may want to know the discriminant if you are using the quadratic formula to solve this equation by hand.  In this problem, the discriminant is -12.  Because it is negative, you know you will have two imaginary solutions (not real).
